Daytona Bike Week 2008 -

7 - 10 March 2008.

Being the stubborn ass, Combat Vets that we are - we had to wait until the worst weather of the entire 2008 Daytona Bike Week occurred before heading to the famed location. So it was with great anticipation, and without our usual WH breakfast, that Wrong Way and I departed the metro and headed south to link-up with Regulator. With the Paint Shaker in the lead we braved Atlanta and Macon traffic in the rain to make the link-up with our esteemed colleague from Augusta. After topping off the steeds we headed south for the winter. Arriving in Daytona to a tropical downpour we got settled at Shadow Sr.'s house and set out for some Chow as we don't like to miss many meals.

On Saturday the precipitation had cleared but was replaced with gusting winds so high they made riding the highway treacherous. We managed to take in the sights at Destination Daytona before heading to our link- up with the Florida Chapter for our meet and greet. Failure loomed over this mission, as your esteemed Chapter Commander failed to check the meeting time before departing the patrol base for the day’s activities - we missed the meet by an hour and a half (yeah I know I'll be hearing about this one again). Even though we missed the initial target, we did get to meet some of the fine folks from Ohio and Tennessee.  After a trip down Main Street and a late meal at Denny's (sorry WH) Saturday night we called it a night in preparation of our ride to South Florida the next morning.

On Sunday we left Daytona and trekked to West Palm Beach and the grand opening of the VA National Cemetery there. Meeting up with the Florida crew at last, we took in the grand ceremony before breaking bread with Stitch, Dreamer, Barney, Sea Wolf, and Norm. Again we don't miss many meals. We left the Florida chapter enroute to my mom's place for a nice soak in the hot tub and some hearty steaks like only mom can make. On Monday we reluctantly packed up the rides and mounted up for the long ride to our Georgia homes. Regulator made it his mission to demonstrate the reason his Triumph is called a Rocket several times on the ride home and almost made me yearn for that power as well. Am I gonna trade the Harley?  Not for a triumph - at least not yet! A great ride and great camaraderie all around, hopefully we can do this again in October, with more folks along for the ride.

Welcome Home Brothers!

Chapter Meeting/Toccoa Wall Ride - 29 March 2008.

The itinerary was set and the

meeting place for the Brothers

from the South and Atlanta

area met up at a convenience

store near Interstate 75 just

below Atlanta. Biskit was the

first on the scene and then

others started trickling in.

When Shadow arrived, everyone

was anxious to get on the road.

Shadow led the way with his

trusty map on his tank bag.
The second stop was North on

I85. We met up with Flameout

in his cage and Rhino. After a

short break, we were back on

the road at record speeds. When

Shadow takes the lead, you

better be ready to roll.

The weather was great on the

way up. I remember topping a

hill up north and it looked foggy

ahead. Two minutes later, it was

dark enough to see your lights

shining on the road. Doc rode out to meet us on the way in. I saw him fly by a cop in the opposite lane heading south. He made a turn-around and caught the group to take the lead into

Clarksville. The rain started

and intensified very quickly.

Lightening streaked and thunder

boomed. I couldn’t see brake lights in front of me. The rain was so hard that Doc stopped us at a convenience store to get under the awning to weather the storm.

We commandeered the whole

right side of the station. We

were only a couple of miles

from Doc’s house, but couldn't leave due to the weather.  The rain didn’t stop, but slowed

down long enough to put on

rain gear and ease back onto

the road. Finally we arrived at

Doc’s. We tracked mud and

water in and Doc offered up his

dryer to dry our clothes. Almost

everyone took him up on his

offer. Warm clothes out of the

dryer never felt so good. Some great snacks and an informative meeting commenced. Doc and Creeper were cooking outside in the rain while everyone else stayed dry and got to know each other a little better. Doc decided that if he had to cook in the rain, we could eat in the rain. The food was great - conversations were even better.

We decided to take the ride to

Taccoa to the visit the Traveling

Wall. On the way we stopped at

a War Memorial for the 506th Infantry that was really great. The series on HBO, Band of Brothers, was based on them. Then we were on to Toccoa. When we arrived at the Wall, we were greeted with thanks and praise. The traveling wall is very emotional to be around, and read - seems there’s an endless list of names that gave all for our freedom. Even in the rain, there were several people visiting and remembering friends and loved ones.

When we left the wall, we stopped at a station to top off. We were escorted out by Doc and then led by Shadow for the ride home. Even though we were riding at break-neck speeds, you still had time to reminisce about the days events and the sacrifice that all of the Heroes gave so we could ride as a unit and where we fit in the whole picture.

Slowly riders peeled off on their exits until Cool Breeze and I rode further south. Cool Breeze exited and I finished the last hour and a half on my own. We had a great time, even in the rain …. Brothers to the end!

Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home - 5 April 2008.

As described by Shadow "this really is about the event and not the ride". This Welcome Home was sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 902 in Warner-Robins, Georgia.  The Aviation museum near Robins Airbase was a fitting location as many of the old aircraft saw service during Vietnam.

We started our ride (drive) as we start all rides - with a visit to the local Waffle house.  Four members linked up in Atlanta and three joined us at the site.  This "Drive" was the result of particularly bad thunderstorms in the area - not that we mind rain, but this was over the top.

The event started with the posting of the Colors by the VVA Color Guard.  Several musical offerings were performed

by Georgia Pipes and Drums followed by a series of guest speakers.

This was a rather complex event supported by several veterans organizations and private sponsors.  The VVA get a great job.

Following the closing comments we helped with the clean-up, snapped a few pics and continued the ride (drive).
